Pinkery Centre hosts the Team's training weekend

The last weekend of January saw the Team enjoying its annual winter residential training weekend, based at the Pinkery Centre, near Simonsbath. The weather was suitably wintery meaning planned exercises with HM Coastguard helicopter didn't go ahead, but we had plenty of other training activities to keep the 40+ team members and trainees busy over the two days.
It was great to have team members from across the region, Cornwall SRT, two teams from DRG, USAR, and a Fire Service search dog with us. The quiz on Friday night, particularly the MR round, brought out our competitive natures, but got everyone to know each other well before the big SAREX on the Saturday. This involved 3 casualty sites, one with a tricky technical evacuation and gave us all great learning points on the importance of the cas site manager.
Sunday, we did something a little different… team building through bush craft. The scenario, after having been given some input on lighting signal fires, using knives, collecting water and building shelters; was that the helicopter with teams in had crashed over Exmoor and we had to build shelter and create a signal for help in the 2 hours we had. This was no mean feat when it's chucking with rain and matches are needless to say, not allowed. You’ll be glad to know all teams proved to be very resourceful and were duly rescued.
A big thank you goes to all the training organisers and Exmoor National Park who continue to support the team.
