A major multi-agency response was initiated due to flooding in many parts of Devon following periods of prolonged and heavy rain.
Exmoor Seach and Rescue Team provided Devon and Cornwall Police with additional resources to aid with the evacuation of homes in the Braunton area of North Devon. At the same time, teams were also dispatched to Tiverton to monitor the flood levels around Tiverton Hospital, should it have proved necessary to evacuate. The Team was stood down at 04.30hrs as river levels started to recede.
Devon and Cornwall Police asked the Team for assistance in the search for a 51 year old male, who had last been seen at 9.30 am.
A large scale search involving Police Dogs and the Police Helicopter proved successful when the gentleman was found at around 13:00 hrs.
The Team were called in to help on the second day of a search for a 58 year-old male, missing from the Somerton area of Somerset.
Colleagues from Avon and Somerset Search and Rescue Team along with Avon and Somerset Police had previously searched into the early hours of the morning. Exmoor Search and Rescue Team were tasked to help re-search in daylight and cover further nearby areas of woodland. The search was suspended at 18:00 hrs.
The Team were asked to assist HM Coastguard and Devon and Cornwall Police in the search for a 64 year old lady from Wiltshire, whose car had been located in the Valley of Rocks near Lynton.
A Search and Rescue helicopter from RMB Chivenor was scrambled at 11.45pm on Tuesday to assist in the search, along with both Ilfracombe’s lifeboats and Lynmouth Coastguard team.
As Exmoor Search and Rescue Team were deploying search teams, the search was suspended when a body was sighted at the foot of the cliffs.
The Team were asked to assist North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team in a search for a missing 76 year old lady in the Paignton area of Devon.
The previous evening, two teams from Dartmoor Rescue Group (Ashburton and Plymouth) searched until the early hours. Further information came to light in the morning, leading North Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team to be called to continue the search. Assistance was sought from Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team - Tavistock and from Exmoor Search and Rescue Team.
During the search, the lady was found in dense undergrowth by the police helicopter. Exmoor Search & Rescue Team's Land Rover was then used to evacuate the lady to an ambulance on the main road.
The Team were asked to assist with enquiries into a missing 50 year old man from Taunton, by searching an area where it was thought he may have travelled. The Team searched until darkness fell, however no trace of the missing person was found. Police continue their enquiries.
A 90 year old Dementia sufferer was discovered missing from his home and believed to be only wearing his Pyjamas in the early hours of the morning. After a brief search on a wet and windy night, the Gentleman was found safe and well.
The Team were put on “stand by” as Police made investigations into a high risk missing person in the Lynton area. These investigations lead to the missing person being re-assessed as medium risk, so the team were stood down.
Just as the Exmoor Search and Rescue Team were assembling in South Molton for a training session, the Avon and Somerset Police asked for assistance in the search for a 75 year old man in a rural location between Stogumber and Crowcombe.
The gentleman was known to travel quite long distances on his electrically powered wheelchair and had on previous occasions got into difficulties. Whilst country lanes in the area were being searched, a policeman found the missing person stuck in a hedge in a field near his home.
The Exmoor Search and Rescue Team were asked to assist in the search for a high-risk missing person in a rural area of Bishops Tawton, south of Barnstaple. The 50 year-old lady was located as the Team were deploying.
The Metropolitan Police had concern for a missing 62 year old man from London. Their enquiries lead them to believe that he was in a specific area near Minehead, Somerset.
The Team commenced searches of an area to the west of the town. A Team member on route to the call out came across an incident which was found to involve the man for whom we were searching. Two of the Team's Casualty Carers were immediately deployed to the scene to provide medical aid until South West Ambulance Service arrived.
The gentleman was taken to hospital, where we wish him a speedy recovery.
Following information left by a missing 46 year old man from Taunton, a car was found by Police at Wimbleball Lake. The Team searched paths, woodland and the edges of the lake for several hours. The search was continued by the Police Underwater Search Team in the morning.
Concerns for a female occupant of a car abandoned due to the adverse weather, lead to the Team being called to search the area of the A39 between Porlock Hill and Lynmouth.
The search commenced in difficult conditions, but was called off when the Police found the lady in Lynton.
The Team joined North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team in the search for a high risk missing gentleman, who had been out all the previous night in freezing temperatures.
It was thought likely that the gentleman may have travelled some distance. This was proved correct when he presented himself at Honiton hospital during the afternoon.
The Team were called to join the search for a 21 year old man on the outskirts of Bridgwater. He was reported missing in the afternoon, but had not been seen since 1.30am when he had left a Taxi.
The missing person was found by family members and taken to hospital, as the Team was being deployed.
