Team Capabilities

  • Trained manpower
  • Thirty strong call-out list of personnel who undergo a rolling comprehensive training programme, including Mountain Rescue (England & Wales) Search techniques.

  • Mobility
  • MobilityWe have our own Control vehicle and two Land Rover Off Road Ambulances - one located in South Molton, Devon and another located near Wellington, Somerset.

  • Self Sufficient
  • We are able to provide our own resources and logistics.

  • Own Command structure
  • One point of contact for the Police, our Search Manager.

  • Search Managers
  • Four Mountain Rescue (England & Wales) trained search managers, also available for discussion before or instead of full Team call-out.

  • Independent communications
  • The team can control itself from its own Control or Mobile vehicles.  We can communicate with other Mountain Rescue Teams, RAF & Air Ambulance helicopters, Police and Coastguard teams.

  • AvailabilityHelicopter Deployment
  • We are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

  • Local Knowledge
  • Our members live throughout our operational area and have intimate knowledge of Exmoor National Park and surrounding areas.

  • Casualty evacuation
  • We train in helicopter deployment, casualty evacuation and evacuation by stretcher.

  • Steep ground
  • We have the capability to operate on steep ground, where the use of ropes and safety lines are required.

  • Swiftwater Rescue Technicians
  • The team have a contingent of experienced Swiftwater Rescue Technicians, able to carry out rescues in swiftwater and flood environments.

  • Water Margin Searches
  • The team are fully trained for searching from the Water Margin / Bank Area and also the surface of inland still water using a boat.

  • First aid
  • Several members are trained to either Emergency Medical Technician or Mountain Rescue Casualty Care standard.  All other team members must have a minimum of either a Mountain First Aid, or First Aid at Work qualification.

  • Working with other agencies
  • We are able to co-ordinate and co-operate with other agencies such as Police, Ambulance, Fire & Rescue Service, HM Coastguard, RAF Search and Rescue and other Mountain Rescue teams.

  • Search DogsSwiftwater Rescue Technicians
  • We have a working relationship with Search and Rescue Dog Association (England).

  • Headquarters/Kit stores
  • We have team headquarters and two kit stores spread across our operational area.
