The team generally cover an area anywhere north of a line extending east from the Cornish border in the west via Hatherleigh, Crediton, Tiverton and Crewkerne then north to Bridgwater and Hinkley Point.
On occasion, the team will be asked to operate outside this area, which will likely be in collaboration with other local teams; Cornwall Search and Rescue Team to the south-west, Dartmoor Rescue Group to the south and Avon and Somerset Search and Rescue to the east.
The team's Rescue Centre is located in South Molton, just a few miles from the southern boundaries of Exmoor National Park. The centre contains a garaging area for two rescue vehicles, kit storage areas, equipment drying facilities and a team training room. The rescue centre, together with a third rescue ambulance based in Wellington and team kit stores in both Barnstaple and Taunton mean that the team can serve the operational area quickly and efficiently.
The team regularly train within the Exmoor National Park boundaries, however the team are as equally likely to be called to incidents in the centre of Barnstaple or Taunton, the Quantock Hills, or in the heart of rural Somerset as within the National Park itself.
As a member of Mountain Rescue (England and Wales), Exmoor Search and Rescue Team members are required to be trained to a level that will allow the team to coordinate a response in support of any other Mountain Rescue Teams in any part of the country in the event of a major incident.
